A few holiday thoughts

Thanksgiving was delicious, despite the fact that we nearly burned down the house. Well, not quite, but there sure was a lot of smoke in the kitchen and the fire alarms were talking (who knew they talked!?).

I've had Christmas on my mind since October... this is a normal occurrence for me. Something with being a designer. I've been pinning my holiday ideas since then. Thankfully I had the patience to wait until after Thanksgiving to go get the tree, garland, etc.

For the past month, I've been on this sage green and marigold kick. I've always loved the muted greens, but throwing in this bright burst of yellow is a bit abnormal for me. I'm thinking of doing a bright yellow pillow for the sofa with a vintage floral print. I picked up this hand towel from Anthro to test the color and pattern. I think I need to purchase the larger size and make a pillow. Vintage chic, right?

All of my Christmas ornaments are at my parents home. I got a great collection of mercury glass ornaments last year for Christmas, thanks to my little sister. I picked them out on Wisteria's website and Santa's elves did a little shopping. If only we had them here to put on the tree. Instead of ornaments, I used my favorite Christmas lights. They're the vintage globe style. I picked up two fresh packs from Target yesterday - $8.99 for 24' and 25 bulbs. Here's the same set online.

Off to clean up those pesky dishes in the sink and start the day. I'm in the mood for a good sewing project!

Over the summer a friend of mine invited me to join Pinterest. It wasn't the first time I had heard of the website, but had been avoiding it earlier in the year thinking that it would be one more thing to keep up with. Wow... I was so wrong. I set Pinterest as my homepage and I've been pinning ever since!

I know the blogging has gone a little quiet recently, but I promise that I'm still thinking design thoughts, dreaming design dreams and doing design projects. Join me on Pinterest and I'll continue to wow you with design inspiration... a whole lot more frequently!

Lets call the blogging silence a "summer vacation" of sorts. I'm still around reading your blogs and pinning away at pinterest (what a time consuming addiction!).

I think I'll be back in the fall with more to say about design. In the meantime, here's a sweet little video about one of my favorite dessert shops in the country. Enjoy!

P.S. - I loved the store so much while I was in California last fall. The non-edible items (casegoods, wallpaper, etc) were just as beautiful as the desserts! I have ordered the book and perhaps will give a review in the fall. Pray that I don't do too much baking!

On Monday I traveled to IKEA for some design inspiration. The store was quiet and I was able to walk around and think about design. I came prepared with some of my favorite design samples. My favorite Russell + Hazel notebook was also in hand. I usually leave the store with a few ideas; Monday I left with more than my head could hold. I'll be making an inspiration board soon, so be sure to check back in the next few days.

Those Canadians have the best of the design world - Sarah Richardson, House and Home Magazine, and now Bobbette and Belle. Bobbette and Belle is a Toronto based artisanal pastry shop that specializes in the most lovely macaroons and wedding cakes. The interior decor is just as much a delicacy as the sweets they serve. Don't you love the wall treatment above? The application of vintage plates pops when placed against the crisp black walls. And the white text is so crisp. This could easily be translated to a residential space. White wainscotting, chalkboard paint on the walls, hang plenty of collected vintage plates on the walls, and even a little food related text - perhaps in French? Oui Oui! I'm definitely saving these ideas for a future dining room.

I had the opportunity to flip through the newest issue of Lonny Magazine this morning while recovering from the time change. Like always, Lonny has beautiful photography. These images are my favorites for March/April.

All I have to say about this image is ... beautiful everything. Favorites are the countertop, lighting (though I would need more than one fixture over an island), simple window treatments, and that cute little window seat sure does make me happy, especially the pink and white striped pillows.

I want a little desk like this for my laptop. And the rug in the image has me considering a similar style from Dash and Albert.

Loving this kitchen by Windsor Smith - totally gorgeous. The marble (yes, all of it including the shelf), the antique-y looking faucet, the flowers, the black cabinets, petite tiles on the floor, and especially the vintage seltzer bottles - loving all of it. Perfect inspiration for my dream carriage house kitchenette (in my design dreams I'll have a carriage house and a kitchenette!). Happy monday!

Sugarboo Love

I love Sugarboo frames. In fact, I first fell in love with them when I saw them at a beachside shop in my parent's town in the summer of 2007. I was so surprised by the simple beauty of the frames and the quotes. One photobox frame caught my attention immediately. Towards the top of the wall rested one frame that read "What are you doing the rest of your life? North and South and East and West of your life. I have only one request of your life. That you spend it all with me." The quote meant so much to me then and still does today. I couldn't resist using the quote this past October when Michael I were married (fun fact: we married in the same beachside town, right across from that little shop that once sold Sugarboo frames).

Sugarboo's frame and art collection has significantly expanded since my my beachside introduction many years ago. In honor of St. Valentines Day, I thought I'd share some of my favorite Sugarboo "love" inspired frames and quotes.

Bayou Walls

Loving the color of my newly painted TV room. The walls and window had been damaged by an ice dam, so repairing and repainting were necessary. You may remember the color options that I had tested on the walls. I ended up choosing the darkest of the three colors - Bayou by Martha Stewart. I'm thrilled with the results and love the grey/blue/green against the crisp white trim. The carpets still have to be cleaned so the furniture has not been moved back into the room yet. I'll be sure to post additional photos when things are back in order over here!

Catching up and What I Love Wednesday

Hello readers! Are there any of you still out there? I have not abandoned the blog, life has just been busy these days.

First, let me thank Leila at In The Tweeds for so kindly awarding me the Stylish Blogger Award! What an honor! I have been blogging for a few years and this is my first award. Thank you thank you thank you!

My google reader told me that I had 98 unread blog posts this evening. I left for work this morning and I came home to 98 missed blogs. My goodness! You all sure are busy writing lots of good stuff while I'm at work! Can I share a little secret, while on the subject of google reader? I'm totally guilty of reading my design blogs on my laptop in the evening, then getting in my jammies and reading the remainder of the unread design blogs on google reader on my iphone. Its perfect bedtime reading for sweet dreams of beautiful homes.

My mom called last night to talk, and before we finished our conversation she told me that I haven't been updating my blog enough. She is right (mothers are always right). Things have been a little craaaaaazy around here recently and the blog took the backseat. I had a pretty bad ice dam (or should it be... damn) in the tv room. The maintenance staff (we're renters), didn't come take care of it for 2 days after I contacted them... Thats a long time when 4 ft of snow and ice is melting into your home! The carpet and walls in the room were damaged by the water leaking into my walls. My slipcover and window treatments were also damaged, but hopefully the dry cleaners can get the stains out. All the furniture had to be moved out into the living room/dining area and our apartment is torn up. Lets just say that I'm a bit frazzled at the moment. The silver lining... my walls have to be repainted in that room. I chose a darker shade of blue/green/grey called Bayou from Martha Stewart's line for Home Depot. The test sample looks great and I'm eager to see it go up on all 4 walls! Oh, and the car is having some problems... and my laptop is running slow and making me a little (a lot) nervous. But I'm not even going there tonight!

Pink and Orange Ikats

Its a snowy morning here in Boston. Not too snowy, just enough snow to lightly cover the car tops and sidewalks. Yesterday it was beyond cold here (and that's not just my southern opinion), it really was -5 degrees when I woke up. That is far too cold!!! Brrr!

If you're like many women I know, you may have been lusting over the Colette Bed at Crate and Barrel. The soft sultry curves, lightly textured fabric, upholstered frame and perfectly placed nailhead details are seductive... however the price is not sooo seductive. Queen = $1699 + SH

Enter Urban Home's Lauren Bed...

Gorgeous lines, upholstery and nailhead details - all very similar to the Colette. While the name is not as memorable as the Colette Bed, the price tag also won't be as memorable on your credit card statement (phew!). Queen = $599 + SH.

So save a bundle by shopping at Urban Home... and save Colette for the name of your firstborn!

Note: This is just my budget friendly opinion. I was not paid to blog about either company.

Imperial Trellis Follow Up

After writing my morning post about Erika's use of imperial trellis, I decided to give myself a snow-day design challenge. My requirements: use Imperial Trellis fabric in citrine and similar fruit prints to create a sitting room in an imaginary Georgian style city home. I envision this sitting room to be off the kitchen, but in a separate room with access to a gorgeous french doors extending out to a patio with slate tiles in a herringbone pattern, a small formal water feature and a beautifully sculpted boxwood garden. Would you believe it if I told you it was impossible to find a photo that described exactly what I wanted to convey? Anyways, here is my inspiration board. I'll list all the resources later tonight or tomorrow am, as well as a total price for the products.

Imperial Trellis Breakfast Room

Late last night I was re-reading some of my favorite blogs (Urban Grace Interiors), and I stumbled upon this dining room that she posted last year. (UPDATE) The photograph was taken by the homeowner, Amy R. of Plain and Fancy Living. More photos of the room here and here. I love the citrus inspired prints and have seen them floating through the design world recently. I think the prints are by Giovanni Ferrari and are titled "Baroque Lemons." Williams Sonoma Home and Wisteria had some similar prints recently, but have since sold out - allposters.com and art.com both carry similar styles now. I also loved her use of Schumacher's Imperial Trellis (citrine colorway), for the window treatments. Naturally, I saved it in my "design ideas" file, and thought I'd refer to it in the future.

Well, what to my wondering eyes should appear... I woke up early this morning to snow, so I kept warm in bed and read some of my favorite blogs via iPhone. Right before my eyes Jenny had just posted a fabric sale of Imperial Trellis fabric! She has both the parchment and citrine colorways at $65/yard. If I had a space for either of these fabrics I would hop on that sale, but alas, I do not have another window to cover or room to fill with pillows. I'm sure the fabric will be snatched up quickly, so if you are a fan of the fabric, be sure to purchase now!

UPDATE: I love finding out more about rooms that I've seen photographed in other blogs. Amy R. of Plain and Fancy Living so kindly contacted me to notify me that this is her breakfast room! Oh la la, a lucky lady she is! She ordered the fabric through Erika and had the window treatments made by a seamstress. The art was ordered through Wisteria. Now I'm really kickin' myself for not ordering the art when it was on sale! It would have looked fabulous in our living room. Amy, if you ever get tired of them, let me know!

Candied Orange Peels: the perfect homemade holiday gift

I never felt wasteful about throwing away an orange rind after eating an orange... that was until I made Candied Orange Peels for the first time.

Yesterday morning started as most Monday mornings do. That feeling that you'd rather stay curled up in your warm bed lingered in my bones. After a few minutes of blinking my eyes, staring out the windows to the gray sky and wondering if it was really going to snow (it did!), I grabbed my iPhone and started checking email and Facebook. As I flipped to the internet browser, a site that I had saved from the previous day came back and caught my attention.

"Candied Orange Recipe," read the title of the web page. I had peeled an orange and saved the rind the previous night and was planning on making these. How could it have slipped my memory this morning? I read the instructions, realized I had most everything, except the oranges, and added the recipe to my mental checklist.

After the gym, I went to Trader Joe's and picked up 6 more navel oranges. I also grabbed some grapefruit and lots of chocolate. I came home and unloaded my groceries as quickly as possible and then began to carefully slice my orange rinds. The recipe I used, from Food Network, called for 6 oranges. I only used 2, for fear that if I didn't like the way they tasted after being candied, I'd be stuck with more candied orange than could be consumed (or gifted) in a decade. That should not have been a fear of mine; this recipe is delicious! I followed the directions carefully and cooked the orange rind 3 times. When it came time to soak the rind in the sugar syrup, I reduced the sugar and water amounts by half, and continued with the instructions. After rolling in copious amounts of sugar in a jelly roll pan, I let the orange peels dry on a cooling rack.

The house smelled wonderful and I was so excited to have a snowy day project. It did take the day to make the candied orange peels, I'm not saying this to scare you, only to give you a realistic idea so you don't make this as a neighbor or teacher gift one hour before they are to be presented to the recipient (been there before!). Most of the time was spent waiting for the rinds to reduce in the sugar syrup or dry. I'd say its the perfect snow day or Saturday project.

I was surprised when my husband tried a few last night and loved them! His only request was that they be dipped in chocolate. I waited until this morning to do that, as I wanted the oranges to dry as much as possible before immersing them in a bowl of melted chocolate. The chocolate covered orange peels are now drying and the plain candied peels are packaged up with labels for Christmas gifting.

For stylish food packaging, I love to use Garnish's products! To wrap the candied orange peels, I used the Medium Glassine Bags. I simply filled the bags up with the shoestring-like candied orange peels, gently folded over the edge of the bag, and adhered a homemade label to seal the bag shut. The labels I used are Avery White Shipping Labels (#8165). They allowed me to design my own logo for the wrappers at any size I desired, however next time I gift these, I will order Garnish's Oval Kraft Labels. I wanted the bags to have the feel of a French candy shop, with a modern, handmade twist.

Photography - Finding the Line

Katelyn James did an incredible post on "finding the line" in photography. If you get a chance, make sure you read it. Its interesting to see how "the line" is used in fields other than interior design. Also check out her photography. Her work is great, and what an inspiration she is!

Happy 4th of July weekend! Last night I made strawberry sorbet using our new ice cream maker. I used the raspberry sorbet recipe provided with the machine, but it was waaaay to sweet. Next time I'll cut back on the sugar.

Some of the sorbet flavors I have in mind for the summer are ginger, blueberry, strawberry basil, and dark chocolate. I also want to learn to make lowfat frozen yogurt with fresh fruit. Perhaps peaches and mangos? Yum!

Perhaps in my future office... light blue walls, creamy white trim, lots of grasscloth... one day when I hit the jackpot and have $122,348,583,456,072 + to spend on my wall art and accessories. But a girl can dream, right?!

UPDATE:

Just had to show you how great it could look to repeat the John Derian platters x 15. For the sake of time, the room is very sparse. Not to worry though, the essentials are in there. John Derian platters, Oly Studio Hanna Sofa, hardwood floors, chunky moulding and blue walls. Thank goodness for Sketchup and Photoshop!

I did the math and its not as much as I initially thought. Oh, and I added in the Hanna Sofa from Oly Studio. Only $9670 plus tax.

Now I just need to figure out how to do this on a BUDGET!

Last summer I purchased this book:

I loved it.... well, what I read of it. I still haven't finished it. That's embarrassing. Especially considering that I was three quarters of the way done. Work was crazy last summer. We were in the midst of a big move and the start of a new marketing plan. Somehow my copy of the book is worn and tattered. If you looked at it, you would think I read it and reread it. I think it just got tossed around in the work bag a little too often. I'm not sure why I didn't finish it in the fall (or the winter, or this spring) but I didn't.

So anyways, its a new summer and I think The Sharper Your Knife, The Less You Cry deserves another chance. A fresh start. So I'm back to reading it from the beginning.

Newton Homes

Today we took a trip to Newton to see a series of homes on the town's annual home tour. I wasn't sure what to expect, as I've never been on a "home tour" before, and boy was I amazed! Mostly older homes, with a contemporary green home and mid century modern home thrown in the mix. Beautifully landscaped exteriors greeted us. We were welcomed into the homes and were amazed to find gorgeous interiors. Luxury kitchens, bathrooms and decor at every turn. Each of these homes were home magazine quality, though I'm almost certain that none of them would have been profiled in the same magazines.

It was fun for us to rank the homes by our favorite interiors. Within seconds of walking into one home, Michael and I both looked at each other, our eyes widened and we said almost simultaneously "this is my favorite."

I was able to take photos of the exteriors of the home, though I found that very few were successful photos. Funny enough, the best photos were taken while walking to and from our parking spots at each home, so that's what I've included.

I also had some time to think about all the homes after a rest this afternoon. Here are some of my thoughts:

1. Not every interior was my favorite, however I've learned through years of studying design is that no matter what the style of architecture, the amount of time and detail involved in designing, developing, building and restoring space is something to be respected.

2. Four hours is a long time for anyone to look at homes; even interior designers. By the end of the tour I was exhausted and ready for some coffee and some down time.

3. All these homes were beautiful, but I can honestly say that I'm not a large home kinda gal. Sure, I love a beautiful old restored home, but the upkeep must be incredibly tiring (or incredibly expensive).

4. And finally... (don't roll your eyes) money can't buy you happiness. Yes, the marble countertops were gorgeous, the Wolf ranges were sparkly, and the Subzero... oh my, the Subzero! But, none of these things equal happiness. I think this is sometimes the hardest part to understand when designing or dreaming of your dream home. These are things, not memories that you can't take with you. So buy it if you love it, but Wolf, Subzero, calcutta and carrera don't replace the real "stuff" that make a house a home... your family and friends. Okay, that was sappy, I know, but when your job is to sell a "look" and material items for a living, these things can easily become the focus. Its nice to take a step back every once in a while.

Just got back from a whirlwind trip to Florida. We went to watch my uncle's space launch. This is his second trip to space and we are so excited and proud of him! The STS-132 crew is a great team of experienced astronauts. We know Steve is having an excellent time floating in space. He's completed one space walk and is on his second as I'm typing. Be sure to check out updates about the STS 132 shuttle and crew.

I just checked one more thing off the living room list. Pillows! The sofa is now filled with fluffy goodness perfect for sitting back and reading a great book.

I made all the pillows out of remants from the window treatments and other projects. The pink pink and ivory pillow was picked up at Homegoods. I initially liked it, but I'm not 100% certain that it works with the orange chair (notice the blue tag on it still). What are your thoughts?

That being said, I wonder what the average purchase total is on their website. While Kate's price tags aren't in my budget, I think some good inspiration will come from these images!

Did I mention I was REALLY busy last weekend making a wedding dress?

Well, I didn't really sew it, but I designed it! My sweet Mom did all the sewing. I helped pick out the initial patterns and chose the fabric and tried on all the different versions of the dress. Her friend Kathy came over multiple times to help with the cutting, sewing and fitting process. Thanks Kathy! We finished late Tuesday night, except for a few minor changes that will happen at the final fitting. Of course I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise of the dress with photos (you'll have to wait until after the wedding for those!), but I can show you a few process pics.

In summary, making your own wedding dress is a good idea... if the following statements are true:

-You know someone who can and is willing to help you sew. Do not think you can make this and fit yourself in it. It just doesn't work! You need to have a sewing team!

- Your sewing team has a good understanding of patterns and has successfully made clothing before. My team has past experience making costumes and tutus for the Ballet studio where both of their daughters dance. Barb & Kathy are quite the sewing duo!

- You have a good fabric store with great employees in close proximity so you can run over and ask them questions. Thanks to Patty at Fabric Hut in Norfolk for all her help.

- You know what you are looking for in a dress and can find patterns that are similar in style. After going to a few bridal shops, I quickly realized that I was not going to be able to find "the dress" in a realistic price range. I sketched up exactly what I was looking for and I went to the fabric store and found 2 patterns that looked like they would create the look. We ended up adding 1 additional style to the dress for a total of 3 different patterns to get the right look - one for the bodice, one for the cummerbund and one for the skirt.

- You have patience and understand the final results aren't going to happen overnight. I can't tell you how many times we ripped out seams and had to stop and think about the patterns we were using. We used muslin for the first dress (NEVER cut your first attempts in the wedding fabric!) and made so many different renditions so that we could get the right fit. The good news is that you can see progress pretty quickly.

- You want to save money! I wouldn't go as far as saying the initial goal was to save thousands, but once we added up all the costs, that is essentially what happened! I am pleased to say that the dress came in around $300 including muslin for the initial pattern and interlining, tons of crinkly, lusciously slubby silk for the dress, taffetta for the lining and all other notions. Note that this number does not include time spent making the dress.

I really couldn't be happier with the dress. Kathy and Barb are my sewing fairy godmothers and what they have created is something I could have never have found in a store. The experience outweighs the results though, in my opinion. It was a delightful opportunity to make this dress with my Mom and it's a memory I'll always have to look back on. So there you go, future brides! We did it and so can you!

Window Treatments and Zimmans

In the midst of wedding planning, I have taken some time to put some color on my windows. As many know, apartments often lack color. Mine is no different. As nice as it is to have a clean, uniform look throughout the apartment, the lack of color is getting a little, well, dull. I am working to bring some color and "L.Alden-ness" into the space.

I wanted to work on the living room first, which has taupe walls, white trim, light wood floors, and a white sofa. The room is crying for color!!! Deciding on my largest print was the first place to start. So I made my first trip to Zimmans, my new favorite fabric store! I picked out this floral print (I don’t know who makes it, if anyone recognizes it please let me know!) because it is fun, vibrant, and features so many different colors. I could see it going about 10 different ways in different spaces. After I whipped up the first relaxed roman and found that the curtain was crying for more oompf! The green in the leaves is gorgeous, and I knew it needed to be better represented, so back to Zimmans I went. Carly was there to help me out; let me tell you, this girl knows her fabric. Within seconds of showing her what I was trying to highlight, she knew exactly where to go. Well one week later and here are the results.

So, what’s next, you ask? Well, I need to make pillow covers for pair of rectangular pillows I bought at Homegoods (the striped one on the sofa above). I'm thinking a solid green with mother of pearl buttons. I also need to bring in the vibrant pinks, reds and yellows out subtly with accessories. Then its on to the fireplace. I'm looking to make or purchase an affordable oil pastel or oil painting for the fireplace. I'd love a street scene, maybe a cafe or little storefront. A heavy emphasis on perspective is a necessity too. Something sweet and Southern to remind me of my Virginia roots. Any suggestions are welcome!

Cheap & Chic - Ikea meets Serena & Lily

Remember yesterday's post about the Serena & Lily Cabinet? If you loved it, but couldn't stomach spending $835 on a shelf, then read on! I have found a way to rework an Ikea shelving unit that is inspired by the Hayworth Shelf for about half the price. (Okay, I think I may have been inspired by Janell and her son's cool IKEA bedroom)

Consider sprucing up the Ikea Hemnes Storage Unit pictured below with a few cans of spray paint. I chose Maine Cottage's spray paint in Zinnia because I love the bright pop of color! Spruce up the glass with your favorite geometric pattern and a can of glass frost. Replace the hardware, and voila! * To further reduce the cost involved in this cabinet, use less expensive spray paint (try color matching at your hardware store) and create your own stencil!

Please note: The Hemnes Glass Door Cabinet with 4 Drawers is not currently available at my IKEA. Therefore, I have not had a chance to try this project. I've typed up these directions for reference. Let me know your thoughts and any experience you've had with these products!

... I highly recommend you take a look at the Hayworth Shelf in Melon from Serena & Lily.

Quite the little beauty, I'd say! I love the geometric design along the sides of the shelf and the two small storage drawers. I envision coasters, candle snuffers, and the like being stored in the drawers.

If thats not in your budget, come back tomorrow for a tutorial to make a shelving unit inspired by the Hayworth Shelf. It will be chock full of Hollywood Glam and quatrefoil!

A rusted old umbrella stand in my parent's backyard. I remember this when it was new held our green market umbrella on the deck. It has been cast away to the side yard, where it has been laced with rust and weeds growing through the negative space. I love all the chipped paint and details in the curves.

Mom, don't throw this one away! It has potential.

Anthropologie Rhino Bust

Anthropologie Zebra Bust

Saw these last time I wandered through Anthropologie. I like the Reduce Reuse Recycle feel of these paper mache animals. And you know I like some zebras! But here's some top secret info... In this application, I actually prefer the rhino! I think because he almost disappears on the wall. Love it!
